It is CPU intensive but reasonably fast. My setup is quite modest -  
mac book intel . For the UK I the output is one large TIFF and yes,  
this  wont work for the whole world. As always, some sort of tiling  
is the key. I'm thinking about creating 200x200 km (??)  tiles  
(TIFFs) for the world and feed them into Mapnik. The only problem I  
ran into so far is memory for creating big rasters  > 10000x10000  
pixel - I only have 1Gb RAM
