[OSM-dev] Openlayers Mercator conversion

Hi!
I hope I  am posting to the correct list.

I am trying to overlay some POIs using openlayers as described in the wiki.  I converted the WGS84 lat lons to mercator as described in the wiki. Somehow though the POIs pop up way down south. In my case it Italy instead of Munich, Germany. Easting seems to be correct. 
Searching the web  for two hours did not shed any light. Does somebody have an idea what is wrong with the conversion code?
