I'm glad that it works for you now. I tracked down the crash to a
signed/unsigned problem. The fix is in SVN now, instead of the crash you
would now see something like:

[Tue Jun 10 19:53:06 2008] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] File does not
exist: /home/var/www/html/direct/17/0/250/249/90/8.meta, referer:
http://localhost/mapnik/
