[OSM-dev] Hwo to get a diff (and apply it?)

Hi,

my goal is to have a tileserver that renders tile on demand and is as up to
date as possible. I just want to serve a small area (about 0,5° x 0.5°).
I read about diffs, but I can't find any usefull information. Wiki just
tells me that there are diffs..

At the moment I download the whole area with the api and import it into
postgres with osm2pgsql (Once a day).
Where can I get the diff and how do I apply this diff on the postgres
database?
