The message could say "auto-generated by old client blah-blah-blah" or
similar.

Nobody would notice, except all the (2000+ ?) JOSM users who will be
forced, by some cutoff date, to download and use a new version.  For the
people who do it before the cutoff, it would go unnoticed.  For everyone
else, it will be a forced change.

I agree that upgrading to take advantage of new features is good, and will
not be difficult for any one JOSM user to do.  But let's not kid ourselves
that it will be completely invisible either.
