It works here on Ubuntu using rubygems 1.1.1, which was released in April.
How difficult is it to update rubygems? It be easier to state that you 
need to have a recent version of rubygems, rather than having a long 
list of commands to install specific versions of gems.
 From the documentation I've found online, using rubygems 0.9.4 or 0.9.2 
does not work.
