I've been planning[1] for a while to make some "starter stylesheets"
available for OSM - the main style (whilst of course wonderful) is
absolutely friggin massive, and leads to most OSM maps looking very
similar (since you need to rip bits out that you don't want, and that
gets tedious, and it's massively complex too). My intended approach is
to use cascadenik, and have things like simple_roads.mss, rivers.mss
etc as building blocks that might not look pretty but are
understandable and easily customisable. All that would then be shared
on gitorious.
