Thanks all for the help so far.

I've written something that should work in theory
(http://www.geowiki.com/keycode/keycode.html) and does insofar as I can
retype the dodgy characters on my Mac - but Ævar reports that it doesn't
seem to make any difference for him on Linux.

Will continue to investigate.
