i don't see it as bloat*. it would be if done the simple way - by
duplicating the API in another controller. but there's a level on
which the serialisation and deserialisation of data should be
independent of the API logic and it would be nice to see the code
reflect that.

sure, anyone could set up a json mirror/proxy of the API or, just as
easily, set up an AMF mirror/proxy. maybe in the short term that's the
best way to provide legacy support for AMF?
