I am using  :
Autoconf version 2.13
automake (GNU automake) 1.11


Strange, but the versions from karmic are different:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/de/karmic/automake
http://packages.ubuntu.com/de/karmic/autoconf

dlocate /usr/bin/autoconf
autoconf: /usr/bin/autoconf
autoconf2.13: /usr/bin/autoconf
autoconf2.13: /usr/bin/autoconf2.13
diversion by autoconf2.13 from: /usr/bin/autoconf
diversion by autoconf2.13 to: /usr/bin/autoconf2.50

dlocate /usr/bin/automake
automake: /usr/bin/automake-1.11
automake1.4: /usr/bin/automake-1.4

It seems that you can use the newer versions or not.
