so it should, but I was wondering why exit_nicely() gets called every 
time osm2pgsql finds an error (in turn it calls PQfinish() function, for 
pgsql mode); whereas there is no provision for system signal catching.

So if I got it right, when the server shuts down while updating PostGIS 
(for example reacting to a UPS loosing main power event) there should be 
no problem, right?
