Your IO-subsystem will already be heavily loaded by the Import into the 
database. You certainly don't want to have it swapping the same time.
I don't recall the default value for the -C parameter. You can try 
increasing this setting. 

But the import can certainly run for weeks that way ;)
1 GB of DDR2 RAM is currently priced 20 EUR. Maybe get some? 

Are you sure you need a FULL planet? ALL data?
