[OSM-dev] [Fwd: Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender]

Alas I do not have any infrastructure to provide, but for quite a
while now I've thought of how useful it would be to gather this sort
of data. I think we all can attest to the fact that routing solutions
(commercial or otherwise) often produce results which are not optimal,
and can even be laughed at by locals who know you'll be stuck for
hours if you try and take the proposed route. Some might say we just
need more speed limit information, which would certainly help, however
that will not provide a complete picture. Cyclical traffic patterns,
traffic signal timing, and frequency of accidents are just a few of
the complex factors that determine the best route.
Until we have live traffic data on every road, and that data is free,
I think this method of gathering average speed per road per date/time
would be of great help. If the infrastructure to gather and
disseminate this information matured sufficiently, it could even be
integrated into commercial navigation units for both consumption and
feedback. Of course private companies are doing this sort of thing
already, and I'm not addressing privacy concerns, but I think it would
be great if some interested party started work on this.
