Besides the "show everything you can" vs "clean" approaches, I think
there is a "topo map" vs "web map" difference in approach. I'm not sure
if it's a coincidence or due to cooperation, but Ordnance Survey topos
and USGS topos look fairly similar. I've long looked at the USGS topos
as really nice maps worthy of emulation. On those, dirt roads are shown
in a thinner line. Making the casing dashed sounds quite sensible.
In my town, there are only a few dirt roads, but knowing if a road is
dirt of paved is important to normal people looking at maps. So I think
the default rendering should show roads
(highway=primary/secondary/tertiary/unclassified/residential/service)
that are marked unpaved. Probably more can be done, but just making the
casings dashed on those would be a large fraction of the benefit without
much downside.
