Hello,
finally i was able to finish the import. I reduced the Ram to 2048 MB on cmd
line resulting in 4GB usage by osm2psql. Postgis used up to 2GB so I was
save with my 8 GB. I'm using osm2pgsql svn version 0.70.5

Best regards
Stefan

While still trying to resolve the issue with osm2pgsql in slim-mode we
realized that the error output goes to the usual log output.
It would be very helpful to print the error to it's separate error
output stream in order to find more easily what's gonig wrong.

Yours, Stefan
