Hi!

I can give you an indication about the distribution of tile requests by zoom
levels on my hiking map server at wanderreitkarte.de.

<=z8 	z9 	z10 	z11 	z12 	z13 	z14 	z15 	z16 	z17 	z18
19% 	3% 	4% 	5% 	6% 	10% 	14% 	18% 	8% 	5% 	3%

This told me that prerendering is worthwhile only up to up to z15.

I also used to do a regional analysis which showed great differences in
access frequency and density. But that distribution depends strongly on the
purpose of your map - in my case it was well-known hiking and holiday
regions. The only general rule is that ocean tiles are almost never
accessed.

If you are concerned about storage space, you have the option to do a lot of
on-demand rendering and regularly delete tiles that are older than n days.
But in my experience, tile storage growth slows down asymptotoically over
time, so I never had to implement that.

bye
          Nop
