I personally have not found the big changesets that much of a bother. But I
think that is entirely due to the fact that I monitor changes in my patch
in Southeast Asia which lies at the periphery of the world coordinate
system. So big changesets don't often intersect my area of interest and I
get a higher signal-to-noise ratio.

I think I can imagine how useless the History tab would be for people in
"central" locations like Europe. But for my needs in monitoring changes in
my area, the History tab is currently acceptable.
