Most (but not all) programmers in the OSM ecosystem have actually
started contributing data to OSM - i.e. working as a "mapper", surveying
your neighbourhood, uploading data to OSM. This is an excellent way to
understand how the project works, and a good basis from which to think
about software contributions.
