That repository worked for me (see 
https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/SomeoneElse/diary/45070 ).  2Gb seems 
too small for France - I find that around 4Gb to be needed for the 
British Isles (only 1/3 of the size in OSM terms).  Try a French region 
from http://download.geofabrik.de/europe/france.html to see if that works.
