If you just did a du in your svn co directory, I suspect you've overestimated as you'll count both copies of each file (there's another copy of each file in .svn/text-base/). I think it's more like 140mb (you probably have built files and other junk lying around), and the advantage with SVN is that it'll only download updates.<BR>
