I am using a base install of the EnterpriseDB version of postgresql (which is 
postgres 8.4 + postgis 1.4.1). I have not touched the default postgresql.conf.

I'll retry with postgres 8.3 and the latest version of postgis and let you 
know how I go (it will probably take a few days to re-import).

Hopefully I'll have better luck this time around!
