We had a great meeting today - please see the notes below for a summary of
what was covered.
Attendees - please forward the chat log, if you can. Mine wasn't recorded,
so I'm missing a lot of good links. : /
Next meetings:
- Asia / Aus / etc. - to be scheduled soon
- NA / Europe - 6 Feb - 0800 Los Angeles, 1700 Berlin - Google+ out shortly
Highlights:
*- HO testbed server update - still not production ready*
-- Rails Port (web site front end) is up and running sporadically &
intermittently at hosm.gwhat.org
-- Tile Server is not - so editing will be not much fun
-- Hardware/hosting:
--- Long-term hosting plans still not figured out, but lots of
possible avenues to pursue in parallel
--- OSMF has been contacted to see if they have any available
resources
--- Muninn Project (http://blog.muninn-project.org/), Rob Warren -
may have some resources to use
--- NYPL / Topomancy may have some resources to use
--- I am on the hook to send brief description of estimated hardware
needs to these parties
-- URL: hope to have this changed to
www.openhistoricalmap.org/com/netsoon, with Topomancy's help. Sweet! :
)
*- Tagging topics*
-- None of these are straightforward - time, source, attribution/citation
-- No real resolution, just an initial discussion of the need for some
thinking through of how to mark items for verifiable sourcing, whether that
information be from an old map, written records, paintings, photographs,
etc.
*- Links to Open Data*
-- Rob discussed his interest in addressing connections between Linked
Open Data and the HO effort
-- Example site currently combining OSM and Linked Data:
http://linkedgeodata.org/
-- Shekhar also discussed work NYPL is doing with a historical gazeteer
*- Historical Areas Discussion* - people interested in setting up regions
to play with the HO testbed server
-- John Levin discussed his work with London from 1660-1725 (
http://www.locatinglondon.org/ - awesome!) and small histories, as well as
his work with Mapping Petersburg, which is a lovely example of where
historical tiles could be of use:
http://www.mappingpetersburg.org/site/?page_id=193
-- Rob Warren discussed his work with the Muninn Project, which is an
amazing project focused on the Great War -
http://blog.muninn-project.org/- he is interested in entering data for
a theater & ensuring it is connected
-- Shekhar Krishnan - didn't really volunteer, but I'm hoping he can test
it with some information from the urban colonial history of Bombay
-- Signup sheet: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/HOSM_Project_Sign_Up
*- Copyright Issues*
-- There was brief discussion about potential concerns with copyright
issues and the need to be sensitive to the needs of potential contributors
-- General consensus to think about this, but as a much lower priority to
just getting the server set up and test data entered
*- Plan *
-- Need to start putting together at least a loose outline of progress
goals
-- Not intended to be a set of firm deadlines, rather a loose roadmap of
where we might be headed
