Marcus - I love your idea for Mainz.
In the short term (that is, within the bounds of people solving the larger
time cycle issues, etc.), what do you think about just:
a) Picking 1 point in time to start with for Mainz (pre-WW2 might have a
ton of data, not too different from today - have you thought of going as
early as possible to reduce the size of your initial data set? That's what
I did, aber ich bin faul.)
b) Going through and figuring out how to show that pre-WW2 snapshot
c) Ensuring / verifying that you have appropriate start_date and end_date
tags for as much map data as possible
d) Ensuring that all anachronistic tags are removed (e.g. amenity=wifi :) )
This is pretty much the approach I've taken with Seattle for 1878.
