There are several potential additional sources:
- Vice county
boundaries<http://www.cucaera.co.uk/grp5/?refs=TQ28&map=road&vcs=true&graticule=true&nsgrids=false&zoom=10&lat=51.57536261053028&lon=-0.2032470703125>:
these were devised in the 19th century for recording plant distributions.
They have remained unchanged and so show the original boundaries of
Middlesex, Surrey, Essex & Hertfordshire. It does not show the boundary of
the county of London
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/County_of_london>(predecessor of the GLC
from 1888 to 1965), which included bits of
Middlesex, Surrey & Essex.
- Old 1:25k maps at the OpenStreetMap
Out-of-copyright<http://faffy.openstreetmap.org/?zoom=13&lat=51.52139&lon=-0.07682&layers=000B00000>map
collection or at
NLS<http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=12&lat=51.52774&lon=-0.08606&layers=B000000000FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF>.
These pre-date the creation of greater London and show earlier boundaries.
The NLS has a wide range of less detailed maps which can help provide the
overall picture.
- Old 6 inch
maps<http://maps.nls.uk/geo/find/index.cfm#zoom=11&lat=51.52765&lon=-0.08612&layers=B000000FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFTFFFFFFFFF>at
National Library of Scotland. These aren't georeferenced, and are of
most use when the area is already known.
It is unfortunate from an OHM perspective that the University of Portsmouth
Vision of Britain data has a restricted licence. (It's also down today).
