FYI - here's a note we sent to the 30+ people who attended the OHM / NYPL
Birds of a Feather session at SOTMUS15.

A few of us will be attending the hack day session tomorrow & we'll send
out follow-up notes on that, too!

Thanks,
Jeff

Getting Started (Better Training Coming!):

1) Sign up for an account! http://www.openhistoricalmap.org/ (probably
http://mapwarper.net, too!)

2) Sign up for the mail list:
https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/historic

3) Download JOSM:https://josm.openstreetmap.de/

4) Find an old map you'd like to trace - either:
    a) Find wms or tms for an old historical map you'd like to map in OHM:
e.g. http://maps.nypl.org/warper/maps?show_warped=1 (browsing) or
http://www.mapwarper.net/maps/9674#Export_tab (wms-specific info)
         OR
    b) Find a GEOTIFF for an old historical map you'd like to map in OHM:
e.g. anywhere on the web or on that export tab at maps.nypl.org/warper or
mapwarper.net
         OR
    c) Find an old map you'd like to trace, georeference it on
www.mapwarper.net & then use that as a tileserver (see (a)!)

5) Point JOSM to OHM:
JOSM -> Preferences -> Connection Settings -> OSM Server URL:
http://www.openhistoricalmap.org/api

6) Add your geotiff or wms as a baselayer to JOSM:
wms/tms: JOSM -> Preferences -> Imagery Preferences -> +WMS or +TMS
GEOTIFF: Imagery -> Rectified image

7) Start mapping the same way you would for OSM

8) Don't forget! Please tag objects with:
- start_date: YYYY-MM-DD
- end_date: YYYY-MM-DD
- source_map: URL
- whatever else you need to / feel like tagging to show source of the info!

9) Ask questions!!! historic at openstreetmap.org or IRC

10) Let everyone know what you've done! Tweet, mail, whatever!
