[OHM] Open Historical map

Hi Jonathan -

Great to hear about your interest & you're asking at just the right time.

We're about to get busy uploading some historical boundaries, and hopefully
also having a time slider to be able to select a view for a particular time
period. Note that I'm saying we're getting busy, but not showing a specific
ETA for having this capability... : ) Hopefully, soon.

Big area boundaries can be tricky to import, though. Do you have experience
with any of the bulk upload scripts? If not, let's talk. I'm going to be
brushing up on them myself this week.

Also, do you have core shapefiles you're working with as a basis for the
import? We could possibly store the data here:
https://github.com/OpenHistoricalMap/data

To answer your questions directly:

1) It should be both realistic and doable, but probably harder than your
typical small-scale OSM-style mapping. Hopefully, we can figure out how to
make that easier at some point here.

2) You should be able to look at whatever sources you can get your hands on
& get cleared copyright-wise. Ideally, your sources will be cc0 or public
domain, but we should also be tagging sources on the OSM-level entities for
now, until we get clearer practices on tagging and citing data. If we store
source data somewhere like the github repo, we should be in pretty good
shape.

3) Regarding moving data from OSM to OHM, I'd highly suggesting adding
license and source tags to all of your points or ways or relations. e.g.
source:openstreetmap, license:odbl. Again... ideally, we'll be getting our
border data from somewhere that is cc0 or public domain. But... based on
what I can see right now, we're going to need to figure out a way to work
with BY-SA sources, as well.

Make sense? I'd love to get some pre-1914 shapefiles of Poland, Germany,
Austria-Hungary, and Russia. Galicia, anyone?

Thanks!
Jeff
