I just grabbed an OSM screen-view of what i guess is the area.
http://picasaweb.google.ca/lh/photo/-7INh0x5ALy2kOQ-CCFX6g?feat=directlink
and to make relief maps is here. (for mapsource and OSM files).
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/GroundTruth_For_Dummies#Generating_Maps_With_Relief_Contours
The map is very vague
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=37.167&lon=74.934&zoom=9&layers=B000FTF
With looking at the cyclemap, we can see areas of where water 'could' be.
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=36.593&lon=74.686&zoom=11&layers=00B0FTF
and carries the most likely probability that it would be populated.
It appears that some rivers & lakes have been mapped in the area.
I just had a quick search, but unfortunately it's copyrighed
http://www.mapmart.com/Products/Digital-Elevation-Models/DEM/Digital-Elevation-Model-Afghanistan.htm
But it would be just looking at the output Contours*.osm files and finding
the lowest elevations / median / between / highest & adding colour.
You can download the OpenStreetMap Google Earth overlay
http://www.mgmaps.com/kml/
Or click this link for default values: >>>
*maps.kml<http://mt.mgmaps.com/kml/maps.php>
* <<< (with no transparency) ...i used a 50% transparency, which seems to
look good)
And you can view the SRTM4 DEM data as a Google Earth Overlay
http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/
download: Download SRTM KML file click here <http://www.ambiotek.com/srtm>
I have a sample here of what it looks like ...
http://picasaweb.google.ca/lh/photo/eMwMXLkg-xqDirImWUbnXw?feat=directlink
You can find the coordinates (tile #) here
http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/SELECTION/inputCoord.asp
Sorry i couldn't be of any further help.
