Hello all,
Just to let you know that MapAction is working with the NGO FOCUS
Pakistan and two specialist flood modelling teams (*) to provide
indications of the flood hazard should the landslide dam fail
catastrophically.
(*) One at Newcastle and Durham Universities, UK, and one with the
EU-funded SAFER project.
Some useful sources of info' about the situation:

Best wishes,

thank you for this 'heads-up'.
UN-SPIDER got this message from SUPARCO in Pakistan last night:
"We have been continuously monitoring the ground situation due to a
massive landslide on Jan 4, 2010 which has blocked river Hunza using
both satellites and ground surveys. Pre and post landslide imagery as
well as other allied information was utilized to carry out assessment
of river blockage, water accumulation and landslide site demarcation.
This has been reported to the concerned agencies for remedial
action."
Certainly if there are experts in this area (civil engineers
experienced assessing earthen structure under hydrological pressure)
it would be good to know of them.
