Robert, and Nicolas,
Thanks a lot for your report and your fantastic work in Haiti !
For geo-localized and "somewhat private" short messages, for example for
reports from the ground, you might want to have a look at GeoChat, from
InSTEDD (who helped set up 4636 short code in Haiti). For this, go to
http://geochat.instedd.org, sign up for an account (free of course), and
join one or several groups. There is a Haiti group there, "created in
response to the Haiti earthquake to help responders coordinate". If you
feel like experimenting with GeoChat first, there is also a HHFT test
group that I set up and in which you'd be welcome.
From what I understand, it should be possible to send and receive SMS
GeoChat messages from Haiti through Twitter short code 40404
<http://help.twitter.com/forums/59008/entries/14226>, for Digicel
customers (starting tweets with "d geochat", after you have set up your
Twitter channel in your GeoChat account). A confirmation of this would
be interesting.
To get OSM map with your latest updates as the basis for GeoChat maps,
you may want to use this simple tile redirection scheme:
http://tinyurl.com/yjdhydb (from Komzpa).
Best wishes,
Jean-Guilhem
