Clay,
Thanks for sharing your experience with outreach at conferences for underrepresented communities. At MapBox we take growing diversity both internally and within our communities very seriously, and do a lot to push that forward. Rest assured a tweet from someone not even on the team is not the extent of our efforts ; )

This could be a great topic though to present to the diversity list - what are people doing successfully to reach out to underrepresented communities around job openings, events, trainings, speaking opportunities, etc. Alyssa, maybe we could start up a google doc or wiki around that?

One of the best ways to reach out is to sponsor a conference for an underrepresented group, and set up a booth there where you can talk to potential recruits. For example, I've gone to the Out for Undergraduate Technology Conference for the last two years, and quite a lot of companies have shown up to hire LGBT college students in tech. There are many similar conferences supporting underrepresented groups (gender, race, sexual orienation, etc.) in various industries, most of which I'm a little too lazy to look up right now.
