When mapping in african countries, we do not have access to documentation that classify roads. I proposed a classification for Mali roads which I think is pertinent for african countries in general.  This road classification is based on the observation of town sizes. The primary and secondary classes are for major towns and the tertiary for intermediate size towns. The unclassifed category is for smaller towns.
see http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mali_Highway_tag

Looking at roads classification around Kitchanga, I observe in general a good hierarchy of roads. But the network of tertiary roads is incomplete and needs to be revised. If you are not sure, use the unclassified attribute.  Once the network is completed, it should be easier to revise the classification.
