[HOT] GNS name merging discussion thread

Blake,

The name tag is for the official name. We do our best to identify it. And field teams if possible revise them.

The alt_name are to help when searching names through OpenStreetMap Nominatim.

For example,

Balaja, Ballajah, Ballahah

We should not repeat the same name more then once in this list of name, alt-Names.

Hi,

Much like the discussion about what type of object to tag with place=,
namely working out the conventions we are using, I have a question about
alt_name v. alt_name_1,2,3,etc. tags

I have been adding via merging the tags as they are imported from the
GNS file, so alt_name_1,2,3,etc  EVEN IF the existing node already has 1
or more alternative names in an alt_name=alt;alt2;alt3;etc type tag.

This results in the same name being listed twice, but with different tag
key values (alt_name v. alt_name_1,etc).

I certainly don't think it matters much to DB size over all or
searching, but I am curious to know if I should keep doing that or stop
it. Luckily it does not come up very much, maybe 5 - 10 times in the
hundreds of nodes I have merged so far, but I figured I'd ask.

Regards,
Blake Girardot
