Elisabeth,

I am from the Montreal area but there is an important OSM community in
Toronto that you could meet before your departure. I am sure that they
could provide you a great support.
You can contact through the CA list.

If you dont have a GPS, an other solution is to install an Application on
an Android Phone (ie. OSMAnd,OSMTracker Navfree). There are also
applications for iPhone. Il is possible to download OSM maps on the
phone and the work without connection to internet.

Hi Elisabeth,

Welcome on the list! That's great news that you'll be mapping with students in Beni! Are you planning to work directly with OSM database or with your own?
If you can't find GPS devices before departure, let me know via which cities you'll be travelling in September: Kinshasa? Goma? There are several organisations which could potentially lend you a few GPS units if your data can help them in their mission afterwards. It will of course depend on the availability of their devices at that time, but it can be an option to consider.
All the best!

Claire
in Kinshasa, DRC.

Hi everyone,

>My name is Elisabeth and I'm new to the HOT group/mailing list. I joined because I am doing a mapping initiative for my master of architecture thesis and wanted to see what I can learn from and contribute to the group. I am partnering with a university in the city of Beni in the eastern DR Congo to map their city and also map a specific theme that students are interested in. I'm heading over there in September and staying for three months.

I currently have two but am thinking I will need a few more as back-up to the android phones I'm using. Please let me know if you can spare any or know where I can get a few at a discount. I am also stopping in the Netherlands on my way to Beni in September.
