[HOT] Newbie

Elisabeth,

For OSMAnd, you can download a map on the phone and then work without network communication.

I never try this, but note that there are gps tracker devices that last for days, constantly taking traces. But this is not possible to add POI's with this in general.

See for example

A solar charger might be good yes.

Hi Claire and Pierre,

Thanks for your response. I am planning to contribute the base map to OSM while more of the details will probably be kept in a database by the school. I am flying into Kampala Uganda to get to Beni. That's a good suggestion to reach out to groups there. Thanks also for the link to the CA list.

Mainly I want to bring GPS units as backup to the phones. I am using OSMAnd and a survey app developed by a company in Uganda. The internet is 3G and so not so bad. The main worry is that the city only receives about three hours of electricity per day in the evening hours which leaves little time to charge devices. Something I am looking into is seeing what kind of portable battery chargers and solar chargers are available.

Elisabeth

There are several organisations which could potentially lend you a few GPS units if your data can help them in their mission afterwards. It will of course depend on the availability of their devices at that time, but it can be an option to consider.

>>My name is Elisabeth and I'm new to the HOT group/mailing list. I joined because I am doing a mapping initiative for my master of architecture thesis and wanted to see what I can learn from and contribute to the group. I am partnering with a university in the city of Beni in the eastern DR Congo to map their city and also map a specific theme that students are interested in. I'm heading over there in September and staying for three months.

I currently have two but am thinking I will need a few more as back-up to the android phones I'm using. Please let me know if you can spare any or know where I can get a few at a discount. I am also stopping in the Netherlands on my way to Beni in September.
