[HOT] Fwd: [OSM-talk] Drop rendering of permissive access?

Does anyone else who has been living / mapping more in developing countries
feel the same as I do about this tag?
That is to say that it seems that all of the commentators (to this moment)
feel that access=permissive is quite useless and at least shouldn't be
rendered by the Mapnik style (as you can see in the Github discussion
<https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues/682>). As I
comment there:
I would argue that the access=permissive tag is much more useful in most
parts of the world than in Europe, US, Canada and other wealthy countries.
See this example from Managua, Nicaragua where the access=permissive
(showing with green in Mapnik, and only in Mapnik of "publicly available"
renderings for the time being) bit of road through the Almeda Castellana
residential neighbourhood is a very handy and quite often used short cut
when there is more traffic on NIC-4
http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=17/12.09630/-86.24460 .
But the security at the lift gates don't always allow you through. So it's
a bit of a gamble.
To me this is clearly access=permissive and there are many similar bits of
road in the developing countries that I've visited where access is not
always certain but usually ok and those roads are commonly used for
shortcuts. It would be a pity if the general map style of OSM wouldn't
render them anymore.
Note: access=destination wouldn't be the right tag here as this is about
driving through -- albeit with a little bit of a gamble. It's clearly also
not just =private because the road is usually accessible -- but it is a
private road.
If you feel for the rendering of this tag please pitch in to the discussion
at Github.
Cheers,
-Jaakko

Subject: [OSM-talk] Drop rendering of permissive access?
To: OpenStreetMap <talk at openstreetmap.org>
We are currently considering dropping the rendering of access=permissive
(currently rendered as green dashes) from openstreetmap-carto, the main map
on opensteetmap.org. See here for the discussion:
https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues/682
We would welcome any feedback from the community on this decision. To keep
the discussion centralized, we would prefer replies on Github rather than
on the mailing list.
