[HOT] Info on Nepal earthquake for NGOs?

Hi Sarah
Quite long journey since saturday morning :)The first days of Responses to such disasters are in essence quite chaotic. I am quite sad by the death reports and about the situation of people in remote villages. I am also very impressed by the international effort. Our folks at Kathmandu Living Labs working in hard conditions are very inspiring.

Last day discusions show that Coordination of crowdsourcing effort fantastic and uneasy. My stats from the beginnin to half day today indicate 3,390,000 objects edited. This in 4.5 days. This is quite impressive. At the same time, we need to validate such data, assure to provide quality data to responders about villages, houses, roads, Informal camps (IDP), etc.

For the various Mapathons, it is important to provide clear guidelines,  to follow closely the new contributors.
Myself, I provide various infos via http://twitter.com/pierzen

The wiki page announces the various productshttp://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/2015_Nepal_earthquake
See also the reports from the Katmandu Living labs.
http://kathmandulivinglabs.org/

Cheers to all for this, including our Imagery providers Pleiades / Airbus, Mapgive / HIU and Mapbox. And surely more to come.

Objet : [HOT] Info on Nepal earthquake for NGOs?

Hello I work with Bond, which is the UK network of NGOs. I've posted some info and links about what you are doing on the Nepal earthquake, and wondered if you have an additional blog post or something for NGOs to encourage them to use the maps, or additionally to encourage volunteers  to get involved? I know that here in the UK British Red Cross are working with Missing Maps to contribute, and that MapAction is also providing information, but it would be useful to have some general guidance for NGOs as we have many members who are responding.

Kind regards,

Sarah

Apologies for cut and paste, here you go Harushi:

Basic Information for Contributing RIGHT NOW

Working on OpenStreetMap Tasks
General Info on the OSM Humanitarian Mapping effort:http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/2015_Nepal_earthquakeIf you want to contribute IMMEDIATELY to ongoing Humanitarian Mapping efforts for Nepal through Humanitarian OpenStreetMap.org, please do the following:First go through the 30 minute training on http://mapgive.state.gov to learn the basics of humanitarian mapping using OpenStreetMap.orgThen go to the HOTOSM Task Manager at http://tasks.hotosm.org/ and select a job that you feel comfortable contributing to. Read the directions carefully for the job, then select one of the squares next to one that is marked as complete. This will allow you to pan to the completed square so you can see how others are digitizing the features and mimic their work.It doesn't matter how long you work, or how many features you digitize. There are currently hundreds of people mapping on HOTOSM for the Nepal Earthquake.Every edit counts.

QR codes can also be easily printed out locally and included on leaflets that are dropped into an area.

I’m confident people will have cell coverage before some roads are cleared.

Ralph,

I believe that you offered the solution within your message.

Can we make it explicit that "New" volunteers are to ONLY work on the White Tiles ?

I believe most volunteers are capable of following this request, and do have the best intentions with their involvement.

It would be onerous to create a huge intake process and train people to a level of proficiency in the middle of a crisis.

But extra hands do make things easier.

So, without an achievement rank that is tied to access, we can ask that the White Tiles are the only ones new volunteers edit. I think it would also help to mention that the leadership will identify and promote individuals who demonstrate proficiency as the project continues.

Om

Kevin Bullock of DigitalGlobe has graciously shared the results of the
TomNod effort so far, licensed CC 3.0 (with a plan to specifically permit
OSM use):
- map:
https://geosprocket.cartodb.com/viz/bb5ed630-ee1e-11e4-8dca-0e018d66dc29/embed_map

- data: http://mapperdev.tomnod.com/results/

It seems like there might be an opportunity in future activations (or now)
to use this data for:

1.) Planning and prioritization - as we move into damage assessment we're
probably going to be a step behind the TomNod participants; we should be
able to configure tasks that focus on areas with a high concentration of
damage reports and high levels of agreement. (I can't claim origination of
this idea: https://twitter.com/iheartcrowds/status/593170666662146048)
2.) Direct import - this is more dangerous, but there's an opportunity to
directly link TomNod contributions to OSM. High-agreement damaged buildings
seems like a possible starting place.

There are many technical considerations to be ironed out, including the
realtime nature of the TomNod data. It could benefit from a streaming API
of some sort, as well as some form of integration in the task manager. In
the meantime there's this somewhat-awkward url for overlays:

https://cartocdn-ashbu.global.ssl.fastly.net/geosprocket/api/v1/map/9ec70f30baf2a63e797ae341c8965733:1430273972053.4001/{zoom}/{x}/{y}.png?map_key=dca6cb71991448200cc2ade26ff013da486a78ca&cache_policy=persist

Hopefully this is an opportunity to minimize effort duplication and
leverage another motivated group of contributors.

Bill can you share more on this:
> as we move into damage assessment we're probably going to be a step behind the TomNod participants;

I don't really understand what TomNod does or why people contribute to a proprietary platforms like TomNod. Why do think OSM needs a platform like TomNod and what data do they bring to the table? Again, just trying to understand the value they bring -- the teams that started TomNod it is wicked cool and DIgitalGlobe, who bought TomNod, is a huge OSM lover - so lots of love.

@Serge: Thanks for the quick reaction in those hectic times.

@Rafael: Thanks for your offer. It would be great if you could give her some guidance :)

I have placed a block message on this users's account in the hopes
that she reads it and can reply quickly to the changeset discussions.
If I don't hear back from her soon, I will revert the changesets in
order to minimize the disruption of mapping in Nepal during the
crisis.

It's a giant slippy map loading newer imagery and asking for simple
tagging. As you scroll it marks tiles as reviewed.

High overlap with the purpose of the tasking manager in building tracing
then updating those with appropriate damage tags; ditto road blocks etc;
but because it has a much simpler task it seems to be easier to use.

Blocked roads certainly would be worthwhile adding in to a variety of
routing solutions - OSM for the roads, TomNod for the obstacles kind of
thing. Ditto updating major buildings in OSM that are heavily
damaged/destroyed.

If the resulting data is licensed CC 3.0; then its
not necessarily proprietary in this instance.

Hi, I'm completely new to this and currently trying to help mapping in the Nepal earthquake areas, via mapgive. Using the iD-Editor, the quality of the satellite images is very low and i can't really make out the features. Please help!

Try taking a look at areas already completed. You'll then start to get an
idea of what a small house looks like in a low res image. If it is too
difficult find an easier task.

If I understand you correctly:

You can collect info about "landslide" text from the OpenStreetMap database
http://nepal-taginfo.openstreetmap.hu/search?q=landslide#keys
http://nepal-taginfo.openstreetmap.hu/search?q=landslide#values

And query via overpass-turbo and export to GeoJson
example:
* ( name ~ /landslide$/i  )  or  (hazard_type=landslide) or
(landuse=landslide)  in Nepal*
permalink:  http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/94J

but you have to check manually every data. ( modification time and other
osm tags )

And you can check synonyms for “landslide”:
http://nepal-taginfo.openstreetmap.hu/search?q=landslip#values
http://nepal-taginfo.openstreetmap.hu/search?q=avalanche#values

Regards,
  Imre

I am quite new too (having done only 1 quarter tile before for South Sudan
Ebola crisis and a little bit of mapping in my local area) and I can relate
to your frustration, what further compounds things is the countries
cultures, building style, etc can and often are different to that of where
you live/have experienced

What I do when I have a hard time identifying features is zoom in and out,
usually that helps with the low resolution and sometimes the stitching
obscures things on one zoom level but goes away on a different zoom level

Usually you can see a contrast that forms an X or a line in the center
which is the roof capping and that's a pretty good give away

Another one depending on the imagery is shadows, they give you a really
good idea of what a given structure is and how high it is (thus helping you
decide if its a short wall/hedge or a proper fence)

Also try cycling between different imagery and that can help identify
structures due to different times of day captures, etc

When I was helping out with the Sudan Ebola outbreak I found it a lot
easier to cycle between bing and the other imagery (my memory is bad
sorry), one was quite bright but low res the other was higher res but alot
darker with longer shadows, between the two it helped me identify what
looked like small buildings to be vans as well as highlight buildings that
weren't visible in the other imagery

Another thing that helps you learn is in your editor (I use JOSM, not very
beginner friendly but it's worth it IMHO) is to toggle your DATA layer (the
layer all the polygons are on) that'll make it easier to see whats beneath
other peoples work and help you learn what buildings, carports, outdoor
toilets/wells look like on the sat photos/aeriel photographs

After a short time you'll get to know certain ground features (random dirt
clearings, weird bright reflections, etc) that give away that there is a
structure there/nearby and it'll make things easier.

Cheers,
Max
