Chase,

Thanks for that tip. I’ve been wondering how to add a button to my toolbar for residential area and now I know.

Subject: [HOT] Common Keyboard Shortcuts in JOSM

I've noticed that people using JOSM have been interested in using hotkeys to add tags, so did some research. The feature is currently available, but I don't think it's widely known how to set it up, so wanted to share. It can be really useful for beginning HOT mapping, since you can quickly tag highways, buildings and huts you’ve drawn without using the dropdown menus.

It takes three steps (all three must be performed):

1. Add presets to the JOSM Menu.
You can use one of the presets available in the Preferences-Map Setting-Tagging Presets-Available presets list, or you can use a custom file on your local computer. For example, I created a preset which should be automatically available in the list, called "Common Keyboard Shortcuts", which includes most highways, building=yes, building=hut, and landuse=residential. This preset will apply tags without popping up a dialog box, which is nice.

2. Add the presets to the JOSM Toolbar.
This can be done in the Preferences-Toolbar customization dialog. The presets added in step 1 should be in the Presets folder.

3. Assign shortcut keys to the presets you use most.
This can be done in the Preferences-Keyboard Shortcuts dialog. The process is a little tricky, and almost all keys are already assigned. Suggested keys are: Residential=’T’, Service=‘Y’, Track=‘U’, Building='D', Hut='H', Unclassified (or Residential Area)='K'.

Hope this helps!
