Hi all,
since August, I have been active mapping the Refugee Crisis in Europe,
together with a team of OSM mappers from the Balkans, Central Europe and
since a few weeks also Greece. We have mapped all camps along the route,
bordercrossing points, migrant detention centres and crowdsourced
information from volunteer organisation and UNHCR. It is used by
volunteers as well as NGOs like MSF. For security reasons we have
decided to save the files locally.

We are also providing volunteer and supply management for grassroots
organisation as they play such a crucial role. This function will be
integrated into a crisis management platform for whole Europe hosted by
the Sahana Software Foundation and will include a map as well. They have
a request from the Hellenic Informatics Unit for a map like ours, so
Greece will be the next focus. We have many plans, starting with a field
mapping project with refugees in Calais, precise infrastructure mapping
along the whole route starting from the Aegaens, mapping in the camps
itselves. Anyway, this is an adventure for all involved and we are very
high spirited.
Please be aware that this is not a HOT project, but a private volunteer
initiative. Before you start mapping anything refugee related you should
have been in the fields or done a lot of research(I have done both) , be
looped into the important networks, get into contact with coordinators
on the ground and have a good understanding of political dynamics and
local history. Also, no up-to-date imagery is available (for free), you
have to deal with registration, accreditation and police restrictions.
Overall it´s a delicate and unpredictable situation with many actors.
But fortunately this is only true for the Balkans. Mapping drop-off
points, warehouses, registration or accomodation centres in Scotland or
UK is a fantastic idea. If I can help with contacts or advice please let
me now.
Let´s keep in touch!
