Hi Courtney,
Is this going to be a series of interviews? Or a paper survey? How many
people do you think will answer?
Here are some suggestions.
*-Have you used OpenStreetMap before?*
*Yes No *
* I usually don't include the "not sure" option unless it is a question
about knowledge, or something people might want to avoid answering
* You might want to differentiate between seeing maps and making maps here
-In your opinion, is OpenStreetMap easy* or hard *to use?
Yes No I’m not sure
* try not to steer answers, by using both the positive and the negative form
* I'd use a five point scale here (very hard - rather hard - neither hard
nor easy - rather easy - very easy), unless number of respondents is too
small to make that worth it
* One element, one question. To me, using OpenStreetMap is a million
different things. Are your respondents going to be thinking about the same
thing you are thinking?
-In your opinion, is OpenStreetMap engaging?
* same as above (steering, 5 point)
* define engaging. You cannot survey abstract concepts. Think of examples
of what would be a consequence of people being engaged, then ask about
that. Avoid asking about future behaviour, try to focus on their present
feelings.
-Do you think OpenStreetMap is an effective tool for you to participate in
mapping your community?
* same as above (steering, 5 point)
* close to your reality, not theirs. Are there any other tools they know of
they could compare to? I think the focus should rather be if they felt like
this was a good use of their time or not.
-Do you think having a map of Fernie showing your house together with
possible flooding events is a good tool for communicating the hazard of
floods?
* I would lead with an explanation of what exactly you're going to do with
this map. Who will it be shown to? Only then ask the question if they think
this is useful.
In general, I'd avoid trying to come up with questions, it's better to
first think real hard about what you think you might be able to learn from
the participants. Only when you have a clear concept of that, try to
convert into questions.
