7 Bayview Road looks like a government owned building so accessibility is
good.
It has one small cafe, sandwich $8, that does not have free wifi but free
wifi is available within the building using a guest account but you'll need
a password.
Limited parking is available at 7 Bayview, $2 per hour or $10 max per day.
Local street parking is three hours max, and $2 per hour. All roads in
Ottawa have a maximum parking of three hours between the hours of 7 am and
7 pm. This applies even in the suburbs.
I'd recommend Ottawa's excellent bus service www.octranspo.com, Bayview
Transit stop is serviced by a dozen routes during the day that go down
town. The frequency varies from five minute service to twenty minute
service. Translated there is a bus roughly every two to three minutes down
town during the day and even in the late evening its a ten minute service.
During the rush hour there are another twenty or so bus routes servicing
the stop. It is also the termination of the Trillium train line.
It's eleven minutes walk from Bayview station to the conference. The
station is on a level with the light rail that is being built. Bayview
Road runs under the light rail so there is a bit of slope. There is no
slope from the Trillium line.
Stats Canada has a canteen in the Jean Talon building sixteen minutes walk
away on the left as you enter, but it closes around 3 pm. There is no wifi
but the coffee and breakfasts are excellent and reasonably priced. Buy
five coffees and you get one free but you have to ask for a card and get it
stamped.
Wellington street has a variety of pubs and cafes twelve minutes walk away
at the other end of Bayview road, to the south.
Ottawa Hotels are used to government rates so if you have suitable id you
may find some savings. Check the OC transpo site, their route planner
gives walking distances as well as bus times. I'm not aware of any hotels
within walking distance of the conference.
If you arrive via the airport catch a 97 bus and change at Greenboro
station to the Trillium train line which terminates at Bayview station.
The 97 does continue to down town. OC transpo tickets are available at the
airport.
If you are flying from the other side of the Atlantic check the flights
into XDS as well as YOW. Air France and KLM fly into Montreal and have a
coach that picks up and drops off at the Ottawa train station (XDS) which
happens to be on the transitway on the east side of town. Not all travel
agents are familiar with it.
Ottawa has excellent multi-use paths for cyclists and 7 Bayview is well
connected to the Ottawa multi-use path network and down town. Whilst
pedestrians have right of way on these paths many cyclists travel at quite
high speeds. Mountain Equipment Coop 372 Richmond road rents out bikes
besides having good waterproof jackets. It's surrounded by an old
fashioned high street. There are other bikes for rent in Ottawa.
Whilst I won't be attending the conference itself I'll be in the Bridgehead
cafe 319 McRae at six pm on September 13th this is roughly five minutes
walk north from Westboro station which is the second stop west of Bayview
station if anyone wants to gossip. The Bridgehead cafe has relocated
recently and it is a fairly large cafe with wifi, plenty of power sockets
and good coffee.
