For certain details, nothing beats an on-the-ground survey; most of the
TIGER data is in effect a survey from various US Census employees over
the years if I remember right. It brought us a long way but had to be
cleaned up extensively and there is still plenty of "TIGER barf" out
there in rural areas.
However, for basic road layout, building positions, and sometimes
traffic controls (signs and signals leave shadows, if the image quality
is good enough), satellite photos come in very handy, though you will
never get things like names from that. It is *sometimes* possible to
discern certain brands (McDonald's, Chick-Fil-A, Home Depot, Walmart)
from just the satellite imagery but this can be very hit-or-miss.
I don't mind good quality imports, but I'm still cleaning up churches
here in Houston from some import done years ago, many of which are over
a mile away from where they should be.
