diversity of the new voting members!</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style lang="EN-GB"><br></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style lang="EN-GB">To
introduce myself a little bit for the people who don’t know me yet: I’m Belgian
and with my background in social and educational studies a little bit an
exception in the OpenStreetMap world. I got to know OpenStreetMap in 2010 and got
really interested in it after I discovered HOT. <br></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style lang="EN-GB"><br></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style lang="EN-GB">As a good, critical
student at that time, I was questioning the mapping in humanitarian and development
contexts. So I decided to focus the dissertation of my master in Conflict and
Development on the power of maps in slum contexts. I went to Bangladesh to do interviews
with a lot of slum dwellers and I also met with the local OSM community,
discussed with them and mapped the Dhaka Zoo with them. Conclusion of my
research: mapping can be a great tool, especially if the local community has
the ownership over the maps. And… this is exactly what OSM can offer!</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style lang="EN-GB"><br></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style lang="EN-GB">After, I
got the luck to be selected for the Eurosha project. Three months of mapping,
promotion and training for local and international actors in the Central
African Republic followed. After an evacuation out of CAR, Cameroon was the
next destination. Promotion and training resulted in a start-up of a local OSM
community and a lot of mapping fun in Cameroon! <br></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style lang="EN-GB"><br></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style lang="EN-GB">Recently I participated
also in the translation of the LearnOSM guides from English into French in
Dakar and subsequently I supported during two months the awesome OSM community in
Senegal. <br></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style lang="EN-GB"><br></span></p>

always encourage opensource during my university studies . Therefore when I met at the InnovAfrica forum ( in November 2012 ) Nicolas Chavent Doury <span style="font-size:12pt"> </span><span style="font-size:12pt">and Augustin</span><span style="font-size:12pt"> who had a workshop on OSM , I automatically loved this beautiful project. Because of my personal experiences before, I got to work on a project where I struggled to find specific and free geographic datas.</span></div>
<div><br></div><div>From November 2012 to May 2013 , I was a facilitator training with Doury .</div><div>From August to October 2013, I was a volunteer HOT in the OSM <span style="font-size:12pt"> </span><span style="font-size:12pt">Espace Francophone</span><span style="font-size:12pt"> project in Senegal .</span></div>
<div><br></div><div>In November 2013, I participated in the translation in french of the guide to learn OSM at Dakar

This new generation of voting members from such different
countries is awesome. It reflects how HOT and involved people
enrich each other.<br clear="none">

About history :<br clear="none">
From France, I'm 23 and studying general engineering in Nantes
(Brittany).<br clear="none">
I discovered OSM, and more generally open source & open data
culture(s) in April 2012. It has been a kind of revelation :)<br clear="none">
Nico was setting up SENEGAL project and I left France in November
for a 6 months field mission in SENEGAL to build an OSM community.<br clear="none">
It has been a powerful experience and thanks to the deep
involvement of many people, it seems that it's working and
spreading everywhere around.<br clear="none">
Currently in my last student year (IT option), I'm going to do my
end-of-studies internship from April to September 2014 in IT
French Red Cross department doing some data mining.<br clear="none">
Loving OSM so much because all together we are building something
incredibly useful and free.<br clear="none">
Loving HOT so much because it supports OSM all over the world
where it's especially, and still incredibly, useful.<br clear="none">

the next two weeks to make sure that everyone knows what (all things) HOT
is, how the organization operates and what is the role of voting members.
E.g. we'll be electing a Chair (person) for the organization and a new

If you want you're most welcome to reply with a blurb about you and how you
got/are involved with HOT, your HOT story, if you may. I wrote mine at the
bottom for a sort of an example. In fact, thinking about it, I think it
wouldn't be a bad thing is also some (other) old members also feel inclined
to write their HOT story. Good to know who's who in this zoo and where are
people coming from :) . Perhaps we could even post these stories someone
online - under an About us section at our website? Just a thought..

My "HOT story":
Originally from Finland, moved to the US (DC) over 10 years ago. I got
involved with HOT during the Haiti earth quake of 2010 and when I lived in
Haiti for 3 years. I've done most of my
mapping<a rel="nofollow" shape="rect" href="http://hdyc.neis-one.org/?jaakkoh" target="_blank"><http://hdyc.neis-one.org/?jaakkoh></a>in Haiti and Dominican
Republic and I've worked in the field with HOT (in
Haiti) and pitched into developing some new projects for HOT.
Currently living in Nicaragua trying to learn Spanish and getting engaged
with the local mapping community (<a rel="nofollow" shape="rect" href="http://mapanica.net/" target="_blank">http://mapanica.net</a>).
HOT is hot because I think that (it's obvious by now that)
Open(Street)Mapping can have a huge positive impact in humanitarian work
and making (economic) development work better.
