I'm using ump2osm which is like mp2osm but generates better .osm
output IMHO (turn restrictions, multipolygons, addressing,
bridges/tunnels etc)

Yup, the converted files are shared but they're pretty big and people
like to deal with small areas. They can split the files but this
creates more work with connecting the objects later so I don't
recommend that.

Right, I'm basically doing the same thing as AutoMatch does, manually
-- yes, it's a very slow process but I trust the results better. Also
it guarantees that the topology is correct later (i.e. road endings
are connected as well as crossings).
Cheers
