In theory they could be easily removed (though in practice people have
been admonished for removing them). So they're not incredibly
actively harmful. Still, if someone wanted to cure a disease and they
took a sugar pill, I'd say doing so was a huge mistake, even though
the sugar pill isn't actively harmful.
