I would agree with that. Unfortunately people keep importing the
external ids in the "hope" that they will be useful in the future, but
not only are they not useful, but they confuse so many mappers who
don't know whether to remove them, keep them, or maintain them when
splitting objects etc.

I'm not sure what the solution is, but I would like to hear from
anyone who has used the ids for the generally stated purpose of
updating an import. Otherwise, perhaps we should update the import
guidance to suggest that it's not worth importing ids in the first
place.
