I tend to disagree on the "any tag you like" for imports. It's OK for
mappers to use any tag they like, but imports have the power to heavily
distort any usage statistics (which are the principal arguments in both,
discussions with the rendering stylesheet maintainers, as well as in case
of attemps to unify different tags with the same meaning), and people will
often look at these statistics when deciding which tag to use for a certain
feature (especially when there's no documentation). One person could easily
"override"/"outplay" the work of hundreds or thousands individual mappers,
with the click of an import, hence introducing tag sprawl, incertainty and
reducing uniformity.
Btw.: the page you linked says in the first paragraph: "So you've followed good
practice <https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Good_practice> and searched
the Map Features <https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Map_Features>, Proposed
features <https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features>, Rejected
features <https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Rejected_features>, Proposed
Relations <https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Category:Proposed_relations>
and mailing lists' archives
<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Contact#Mailing_lists> and still can't
find a tag for what you'd like to map?".
In this case (mapping the size of a tree trunk), there is already a tag for
what he wants to map, so the page doesn't seem to apply anyway. And later
on it says: "you SHOULD create a proposal
<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features> for your feature,
if:
1. Your feature is of general interest,...."
So rather than just "using" the tag, a proposal should be prepared if there
wasn't an established tag already.
Cheers,
Martin
