I guess this wasn't even a hack, but a lazy wiki page writer saving some 
typing. I remember I was also a bit confused when I read that page the 
first time. What really helped was looking at a real world example to 
get the right idea.

I've updated 
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Mapping/Features/Place_of_Worship 
a bit to prevent further missunderstanding ...
