I'm not happy with that decision either, but we are still supporting java 5
for the while.  Unfortunately there have been some changes in the bytecode
format and also in the API, so the easiest way to ensure compatibility is to
build JOSM using java 5.

Apart from that, JOSM also builds and runs fine using java 6 and even java 7,
so backwards compatibility is just a matter of not depending on new features.
