Hi Robert!

Sounds like an interesting extension, if you are working with 
tilesAtHome and alike tools.

As the number of JOSM users actually dealing with tile numbers is low 
compared to the number of JOSM users not doing so, IMHO this seems to be 
a perfect example for a plugin.

Would you mind to implement this as a plugin? The namefinder or 
slippy_map_chooser plugins might be a good starting point - you'll find 
the sources of them in the OSM SVN under applications\editors\josm\plugins
