A visual indication on the end that will be extended would be provided
by the terminal mode being highlighted. This would then make it
consistent with joining only to selected nodes when a way was not selected.
To keep tagging easy would require tagging to be done only on ways when
both ways and nodes are selected. This would be useful anyway to keep
down the number of incorrectly tagged nodes. Tagging both together would
be rare.
